Wide Area Networks (WANs) are used for connecting devices over large geographic distances, such as a city or even worldwide, and Personal Area Networks (PANs), which are usually within ten meters of each other for personal use.

A metropolitan area network (MAN) covers a larger area than a local area network (LAN), like a city or town, or a global area network (GAN), which includes connections like the Internet.”

  1. Discuss the OSI Model

In general, OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) models describe how different network protocols interact to provide network services.

“There are seven layers in the OSI model that play a specific role in the communication process. From bottom to top, they are the Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application layers.”

  1. Define an IP Address and MAC Address

“Internet Protocol addresses, or IP addresses, are an identifier that can either be static, i.e., remaining the same over time, or dynamic, i.e., varying every time the device connects to the network.

  1. What Role Does a Firewall Play in a Network?

Similar to how castle walls shield it from invaders, a firewall serves as a fundamental guardian for our computer network. 

Simply put, it functions as a network security system, overseeing and regulating incoming and outgoing network traffic according to established security protocols. 

Firewalls establish a protective boundary, separating a reliable internal network from external networks deemed untrusted.

Network protocols comprise a collection of rules and standards governing the exchange of data and communication among computers within a network.

To excel in this field, demonstrate a profound understanding of computer networking by solving problems rather than merely defining concepts. When explaining topics like DNS, go beyond basic definitions and explore its role in converting domain names to IP addresses, its importance in internet functionality, and recent advancements like DNSSEC.

Use Real-World Examples

Show your expertise by connecting theory to real situations. When discussing network security risks, go beyond textbook examples. Share a specific experience, like detecting and neutralizing a Trojan in your company network, to demonstrate both competence and achievements in your field.
