ChatGPT Jobs Data Summary & Conclusions
ChatGPT has had an amazing impact on the job market in a very short period of time. Within only 5 short months since its release by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, we already see clear evidence of widespread, sweeping changes across many different industries and job functions throughout the US job market.
Employers are now demanding ChatGPT skills from job employees as they adapt to the emerging opportunities ChatGPT is creating.
Employees and job seekers now have new opportunities to advance their careers by filling these new employer needs.
Although many ChatGPT jobs are specific to technical positions or technical industries, most of the opportunities are available to people in non-technical roles in a wide range of non-tech industries located throughout the US, not just in tech hub locations.
Given that it’s still “early days” in the evolution of ChatGPT skills and jobs, we expect to see this gap widen significantly over the coming years. We predict that a greater and greater share of jobs demanding ChatGPT skills will be non-technical jobs in industries outside the tech industry. We also expect all 50 states to eventually have job opportunities for savvy professionals who invest in developing their ChatGPT skills.
ChatGPT Jobs by State or Remote Work
ChatGPT jobs tend to favor remote workers. More jobs requiring ChatGPT skills are available to remote workers than jobs in any single US state. In fact, a quarter of all ChatGPT jobs are fully remote.
Out of the 75% of ChatGPT jobs that are not remote, the states with the most ChatGPT jobs include California (19%), Texas (10%), and North Carolina (7%) for a total of over one third of all ChatGPT jobs (36%).
California, Texas, and North Carolina lead the way in ChatGPT job creation, thanks to the heavy presence of tech companies in places like Silicon Valley, Austin, and the Research Triangle respectively. These states have an outsized share of job postings in Engineering, Data Science, and Product Management for software companies and IT services companies.
But what we find most interesting is all the other states. The majority of the non-remote ChatGPT jobs (52%) are in other states, most of which don’t have as sizable a tech industry as California, Texas, and North Carolina. Some do, such as New York and Massachusetts. But even excluding those states, ChatGPT job opportunities exist in 23 states that are generally not dominated by the tech industry.
This means that jobs with ChatGPT skills are widely available and not just confined to a handful of tech hub states.
ChatGPT Jobs by Industry
Unsurprisingly, almost half (45%) of the jobs demanding ChatGPT skills are in the tech industry, either Software Development or IT Services.
But the majority (55%) of ChatGPT job opportunities exist in a wide range of non-tech industries including Advertising Services, Financial Services, Higher Education, and Manufacturing.
Given the sweeping variety of industries demanding ChatGPT skills, it appears that no industry may be left untouched by ChatGPT in the future, as both employers and job seekers continue to adapt to the new opportunities ChatGPT is creating.
ChatGPT Jobs by Job Function
Fully 61% of ChatGPT job opportunities are available for non-technical roles. These roles include a wide range of different fields such as Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, various administrative positions, and a host of other non-technical roles.
Marketing jobs are by far the most impacted by the emerging demand for ChatGPT skills. In our research, we found that the Marketing jobs most commonly affected by ChatGPT include jobs in Content Marketing, SEO/SEM, and Social Media Marketing. But these Marketers are by no means alone. The majority of Marketing job postings asking for candidates with ChatGPT skills are outside of these three specific fields, spanning a wide range of other Marketing fields as well.
Engineering job postings are the second most common to ask for candidates to have ChatGPT skills, representing 19% of all ChatGPT job postings. Most (59%) of the Engineering jobs requesting ChatGPT skills come from the Software Development industry. In general, these jobs involve either directly developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) software products or supporting other Engineers in their efforts to develop AI products.
Data Science jobs are the third most common types of jobs to demand ChatGPT skills. These jobs generally support various functions within the employer’s organization with data science and analytics services that help the employer’s decision makers make better, more data-driven business decisions. Some also help the company’s clients with similar supporting services.
Only 38% of Product Management jobs come from tech companies looking for Product Managers or Product Marketers to work on AI products. The remaining 62% of Product Management jobs in need of ChatGPT skills come from a wide range of non-tech companies such as Financial Services and Manufacturing.
Compensation for ChatGPT Job Skills
By far, the majority of ChatGPT job opportunities are permanent, full-time, salaried positions. As much as 91% of ChatGPT job postings are permanent rather than contract-based or temporary, 94% are full-time rather than part-time, and 85% are salaried rather than compensated based on an hourly rate.
The average salary range midpoint for jobs that demand ChatGPT skills is $111,161. And the average hourly rate for hourly ChatGPT jobs is $39.40 per hour.
Most (90%) salaried ChatGPT jobs range from $50k to $200k per year, with only 4% of jobs falling under $50k per year and only 6% of jobs coming on over $200k per year.
Out of all salaried ChatGPT jobs, those with a salary range midpoint between $50k and $99k per year make up 42%, while those with a midpoint between $100k and $149k make up 29%, and those with a midpoint between $150k and $199k make up 19% of all salaried ChatGPT jobs.
Methodology
This research article discusses the current state of job opportunities for job seekers with skills involving the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, which is powered by a large language model (LLM) form of artificial intelligence. The job market has responded rapidly in the 5 months since the initial release of ChatGPT in November, 2022. The purpose of this research is to get a better understanding of the kinds of job opportunities already available to job seekers who have developed skills in using ChatGPT in that short period of time.
We captured data from all publicly listed job postings in the US that included the word “ChatGPT” from Indeed.com as of April 25, 2023 as the basis for this research. We eliminated any job postings where the word “ChatGPT” was not used to express a skill desired by the employer who posted the job. We eliminated any job postings published by companies whose identity could not be verified. The final data set included 114 job postings by 100 companies.
We categorized each company that had published a ChatGPT job posting into a given industry, based primarily on the industry each company listed on their LinkedIn company page. For companies that did not have a LinkedIn company page, we reviewed the company’s website to determine the company’s industry.
We categorized each ChatGPT job posting into a given job function, based on our best judgment after fully reading and understanding the roles and responsibilities of each job.
We analyzed each ChatGPT job posting’s income potential by looking at the subset of job postings that included a complete income range with both a minimum and maximum income. We did not include job postings with only a minimum or only a maximum. Of the 114 job postings we analyzed, 52 included enough salary range data, including both a minimum and a maximum, and only 10 included enough hourly rate range data. For these job postings, we calculated the midpoint between the minimum and maximum compensation. The midpoint was then used in all subsequent research results.
We found that the overwhelming majority of ChatGPT job postings are salaried full-time permanent positions, with only a few being hourly, part-time, temporary, or contract based.
The research concluded that ChatGPT jobs are frequently remote jobs, but that the most common US locations for ChatGPT jobs that are not remote include California, Texas, and North Carolina, which together make up 36% of all ChatGPT jobs.
Not surprisingly, we found that the most common industries hiring for ChatGPT job skills are Software Development and IT Services, which together make up almost half (45%) of all ChatGPT jobs.
Perhaps more surprisingly, we discovered that Marketing positions are by far the most common job opportunities by a wide margin, with 32% of all ChatGPT job postings looking for a Marketing professional, and with Engineering jobs coming in at a distant second of 19% of all ChatGPT job postings.
